As long as there have been people, there have been people wanting to plant a seed and watch it grow. Over the years this has not only been a hobby, but a way of life for many farmers and growers around the world.
Gardening is an important resource for people. We depend on agriculture to feed us and provide us with the extras of life. For example, grapes give us, not only the fruit to enjoy, but the juice can be made into extracts, foods and beverages. The vanilla bean gives us rich flavor to be added to edibles and non-edibles (like candles and perfumes). Plus, where would we all be without the comforting flavor of the cocoa and coffee bean? I know I’d miss that late-night hot chocolate and my morning zing.

Polar bears are the largest of all the land predators and also the largest of all the bears. It is highly recognized by its white fur and black eyes and nose. These magnificent beasts live on the cold shores of the Arctic where they hunt, mate, eat and sleep.
The polar bear is well suited to this icy region. Under that thick layer of waterproof white fur is black skin that absorbs the sunlight. They also have a thick layer of blubber (like the whale and seal) to help insulate them from this rough climate.
The massive paws of the polar bear are very useful. They are not only covered in a thick layer of fur but the pads on the bottom of its feet have a suction-cup like grip that keeps it from slipping. In addition, it also has sharp claws that act as ice-picks to further keep the polar bear from sliding around on this icy tundra, as well as enabling the female to dig her den. The front and back paws are both webbed to help propel the bear through the water. These “flippers” of sort allows the polar bear to swim 100 miles (161 kilometers) at a stretch.
They are man’s (and woman’s) best friend and are loyal companions. They help the blind and challenged live normal lives and bring peace to the troubled. They herd, hunt, retrieve, guard, protect, nurture and will even stand for hours and parade around the show ring as they are shown off for their beauty and attributes.
Where would we be without the dog?
These animals have been around for thousands of years and as best scientists can tell the wolf was probably the first canine to be domesticated. But is it any wonder that even our earliest relatives wanted the loyalty and companionship (we still crave today) that can only be fulfilled by the dog?

Who doesn’t like puppies with their constant wagging tails and wet noses? They can melt our hearts and bring so much joy to our lives. However, not all puppies are created equally. Depending on the breed, puppies can be really big or really small, flat-faced, or round-snouted. But they all still have one thing in common; their sole purpose on earth is to bring unconditional love and affection to their family.
You may remember getting your first puppy. It could have been as an adult – as the constant begging and pleading with mom and dad may not have worked – or is that just me? Puppies are a lot of work and it takes time to properly train them. Depending on how “smart” you want your adult dog to be depends on the training when it is still a puppy – an untrained dog will still have accidents in the house if you failed to properly house break it.
Puppies need constant positive reinforcement to learn and respond in a positive and obeying fashion. Never smack a puppy or rub its nose in its own urine/feces. This old adage is wrong and will only lead to resentment, fear and frustration from your new member of the family. Remember, there are no bad dogs, just owners who fail to read up on their particular breed or who become easily discouraged from training the puppy properly.
We have probably all seen the terrifying movie, Jaws, which left us debating whether we really wanted to enter into the waters for recreational fun. However, this flick was based more on horrific movie fun than real facts. Let’s check out the world of sharks to see if we can at least debunk the stalking man-eating trivia of Jaws.
There are 350 species of shark and they can range in size from small to humongous. They have lived in our oceans for around 350 million years. They have an acute sense of hearing and smell along with good eyesight. They use these senses to hunt their prey.
The shark is made up mostly of cartilage instead of bone. This makes it a powerful swimmer. And strangely enough their skin may look smooth, but it is actually so rough it can be used as sandpaper.

Space is indeed the “final frontier” and even though man has exhausted his exploration of the moon, we are still trying to reach beyond this realm and go further than we ever have before. Scientists are now wondering what is on the icy moon of Jupiter’s Europa and are working towards building a robot that can find out.
As we grow in technology we have now been able to probe Mars to find out what really lies among the red dust and dirt of the 4th planet from the sun. Could there have been life on this Martian rock? With 70,000 images beamed back from the rover aptly named, Curiosity, scientists are anxiously discussing the possibilities.
However, this still isn’t enough. We want to know what is in the heavens above and beyond, so on April 24,1990 the Hubble telescope was launched into space from the space shuttle, Discover. This ingenious piece of equipment is 43.5 feet long (13.2 meters), 14 feet wide (4.2 meters) and weighs a whopping 24,500 pounds (11,113 kilograms)! And it only cost 2.5 billion dollars!
I wonder if many of us ever stop and consider the fish – other than if we want it grilled or fried. Fish are found everywhere on earth. In fact, there is over 30,000 known species of the fish.
For the most part people know very little about these amazing creatures. We do know they live underwater and breathe air through their gills, but did you know 1,000 fish species are on the verge of extinction? Or that some are so small they can fit on your thumbnail? While others rival the size of a bus?
Let’s take a look at some cool fish facts that will leave you amazed.
Fish don’t have vision like we do in 3D because their eyes are on each side of their heads. But what they do have is a heightened sense of smell. Females use their smell to help them locate a safe place to lay their eggs and the salmon uses its acute sense of smell to find its way back to its home spawning waters.
When you are a child, birthdays are an exciting time of the year – you get to be a year older and all your friends and family are there to support and celebrate this personal victory. The same goes as you get older – except a large amount of alcohol will be needed to create the same excitement of another year gone by. However, your family and friends will still be there in support to celebrate this occasion with you.
Giving anyone a special birthday really isn’t that difficult, you just need to use a little imagination to get things rolling. For example, if your child is into any animated character, the retailers have made it simple to pick up all the supplies you need to decorate. These can be incorporated into a base color and added to other aspects – if your child likes princesses, then decorate the cake in pink and add pink taffeta bows to the back of your chairs or entranceway.
If you have a gang of rough and tumble boys coming over, then plan some outdoor activities like a scavenger hunt or have them make their own dirt cake. An afternoon party can also be turned into a costume party for both boys and girls. Let their parents know on the invite to have their child dress up as part of the theme, then offer small prizes at the end of […]
